Ccoronary artery disease

Are you worried about coronary heart disease? If not, you should be. One of the most common heart disease causes – coronary artery disease – is a leading cause of death in the U.S. for both men and women.

 What causes this problem?

Coronary artery or coronary heart disease is caused when the coronaries, the small blood vessels that carry blood and oxygen to the heart, become narrowed. This is caused when fatty material and a substance called plaque build up on the walls of your arteries. The condition is called atherosclerosis.

As your coronary arteries become narrower and narrower, the flow of blood to your heart slows down more or even stops. This can show up as chest pain (angina), shortness of breath or even a severe heart attack and death.

What increases your risk of coronary artery disease?

There are a number of things you need to be aware of that increase your risk for developing coronary artery disease.

For example, men in their 40s have a higher risk than woman. But as woman get older and become menopausal, their risk increases to become almost the same as for a man.

Heredity can be a risk factor

Heredity - bad genes - can also be a risk factor. If someone in your family has a history of heart disease, you are more likely to develop coronary artery disease. And your risk for developing this disease goes up the older you get.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a strong risk factor for developing coronary heart disease, as is high blood pressure. If you have an abnormal cholesterol level – if your LDL is high – this is also a risk factor.

Metabolic syndrome and coronary artery disease

You have a metabolic syndrome when you have high triglyceride levels, high blood pressure, increased insulin level and excess body fat around your waist. If you fall into this category, you are at an increased risk for coronary artery disease.

Smokers are at a much higher risk for coronary heart disease than non-smokers as are people with chronic kidney disease.

The symptoms of coronary heart disease

The most common symptom of this disease is chest pain or discomfort (angina). You may feel this when your heart is not getting enough blood or oxygen. How painful the angina feels varies from person to person only mild.

  • It may feel as if someone is squeezing your heart or that your heart feels heavy. You may feel this under your breastbone or also in your neck, arms, stomach or upper back.
  • You will most often feel the pain when you are active or feeling strong emotions.
  • Other symptoms include shortness of breath and fatigue when you exert yourself.

See your healthcare provider

If you are experiencing any of these systems so that you may have Heart disease causes –coronary artery disease – be sure to get to your healthcare provider immediately. This is a serious condition and must be treated as such.
